Luisteren met Chantal Acda
Fluister presents a new column on this website: ‘luisteren met’ (listening with)…
While ‘Fluisteren met’ (Whispering with) features interviews with artists, ‘Luisteren met’, we ask artists to share 5 songs with us
This time we were curious to know which 5 songs inspired singer-songwriter Chantal Acda.
Fluister has a special bond with Chantal Acda. She has performed at Fluister, appearing as herself, Sleeping Dog, Nu nog even niet and True Bypass. Chantal never fails to surprise, amaze and constantly reinventing herself.
Her recent release, ‘Silently Held,’ Chantal Acda & The Atlantic Drifters, is, in our opinion, a new masterpiece. It features contributions by Jozef Dumoulin, Eric Thielemans, Bill Frisell, Thomas Morgan, Niels van Heertum, Joachim Badenhorst, Kurt Van Herck, Shahzad Ismaily, and Colin Stetson. After the summer, Chantal will embark on a tour with The Atlantic Drifters. Dates are listed below the article.
To mark this beautiful moment, Fluister asked Chantal to share five songs that have inspired her.
1. Joni Mitchell – Both sides now
I was about 16 when one of my mother’s students, a singing teacher, gifted me an album with this song. For me, it became a profound inspiration to start writing my own music. The song tells a beautiful story that resonates deeply with me, exploring themes that often concern me—the multifaceted sides of the world around us. It highlights the value found in the darker aspects of life and the vulnerable power they exude, all wrapped in the rare and exceptional musicianship of Joni Mitchell.
2. Mark Hollis – Inside Looking out
Actually, all the songs on this album are among my favorites, but I chose one anyway. Mark Hollis—where to start? What a remarkable record. I know this album inspires many musicians with its layered, deep, and richly textured sound. This particular song stands out for its organic feel, despite being meticulously produced. I’m fortunate to often work with the producer behind this masterpiece, which has given me an even deeper understanding of the stories behind the songs. It’s truly authentic.
3. Bon Iver – Faith
Bon Iver is another favorite of mine. While I love many of his songs, this one has been on repeat for a long time. It gave me confidence when I had lost it. I remember driving on an empty highway at night, playing this song in the car, and letting the tears come. Its softness blends seamlessly with surrender, offering a sense of freedom and deep soul. Experiencing it live is equally fantastic.
4. Phoebe Bridgers – Moon Song
It’s incredible how things turn out. I had often people tell me that I would love Phoebe Bridgers, but I always thought, ‘Yeah, sure.’ Finally, I decided to give her a listen. On the first play, I thought she had an easy listening voice. By the second listen, I started to notice the depth of her lyrics. By the third to the 5000th play, I was completely captivated. Up to my ears in love. ‘Moon Song’ is a stunning track with so much layering, showcasing her exceptional craftsmanship. Lyrically, she sets a high standard. The line, ‘When you saw the dead little bird, you started crying, but you know the killer doesn’t understand,’ is masterful.
5. Kanye West – I am God
Something completely different, but equally incredible. The production by Rick Rubin (check out his book, ‘The Creative Act’) is solid and refined. Every time I hear this song, I get goosebumps and feel a touch of envy. It would be fantastic to create something so powerful.
